Best Artist Colored Pencils – Their Quality

Best Colored Pencils | Difference of Wax vs Oil based Coloring Pencil

Quality artist colored pencils can be expensive. Naturally, you would want the best value out of your investment in these pencils, be it for professional artist creation or for academy practice. It is important to know what makes them the best colored pencils for your art or coloring project.

Whether you are a professional artist or a coloring book enthusiast, these are the evaluation criteria to consider in buying the pencils :

  • Rich & vibrant colors
  • Ease and smoothness in layering, burnishing and blending
  • Lightfast quality (fade-resistant)
  • Soft core vs hard core

Professional artist grade pencils are generally soft core and higher quality than those of Student or Academy Edition. They will deliver richer and brilliant hues that are more vibrant on paper. This is because of the higher pigment content in the lead core that gives it the characteristic soft core. Do note that soft core pencils can break more easily and needs to be handled with extra care and proper drawing technique.

Inferior quality (cheap and regular) colored pencils, on the other hand, do not contain enough pigment content. As such, they can’t create drawings that are vibrant and brilliant to the eye. Do give the regular colored pencils a miss if you do not want dull or pale tones.

Another important feature of artist colored pencils is how well the pencil applies its color on the paper. The best art pencils will seem to effortlessly layer, blend and burnish colors on the artist paper surface.

If you’re looking for top range artist colored pencils, you may want to opt for oil based pencils as opposed to wax-based. Read more here at BEST COLORED PENCILS – DIFFERENCE OF WAX VS OIL

Some Tips For Selecting Your Best Artist Colored Pencils

Finding the best colored pencils is a matter of personal preference and the task at hand. Some pencils are soft, laying down thicker opaque layers and more painterly; others are hard and better for detailed drawing. Some are more suited to different weights of paper, some to how the artist prefers to draw, in single or multiple layers, with light or heavy pressure.

Choose a soft pencil if you want a broader opaque stroke and creamy colors; harder ones are better for detailing but not for covering large areas.
